American Tortoise Rescue Calls for a Moratorium on Sales
Turtle and tortoise wildlife groups and rescue organizations throughout North America, led by Malibu based American Tortoise Rescue (http://www.tortoise.com), are calling on the pet industry, reptile wholesalers and private breeders to stop the sale of giant tortoises commonly called sulcatas. Geochelone sulcata is a hardy and personable species of tortoise. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, it became part of the lucrative pet trade during the 1990s. It has an engaging nature, is attractive and sells for anywhere between $50 and $1,000. These traits make it one of the most commonly purchased pet tortoises in North America. Unknown to the unwary buyer, however, is thatsulcatas are the third largest species of tortoise in the world weighing up to 70 - 200 pounds, attaining this size in a very short period of time. Adult female sulcatas can easily produce 50 –100 eggs a year. It is not unusual to see hundreds of hatchlings for sale at reptile shows even though selling any turtle or tortoise in the U.S. under four inches is illegal. According to Susan Tellem, co-founder of American Tortoise Rescue (ATR), the sale of sulcatas today is similar to the pet trade's large-scale sale of iguanas during the early to mid-90s. Many people bought cute baby iguanas not realizing that they would grow to as long as six feet and become aggressive. Just like iguanas, Sulcata breeders and pet stores that sell them create problems that other people, especially reptile rescuers, have to solve. "The pet industry constantly looks for small, adorable exotic animals with a big price tag," Tellem says. "We've conducted a survey of sulcata owners about what they were told when they purchased their tortoises. Whether at a pet store or reptile show - the answer is the same. 'It won't get bigger than its tank.' This is patently ridiculous and often a deliberate lie.” Tellem says, "New owners quickly become aware of the difficulties associated with having a potentially destructive non-housebroken animal of this size. A fully-grown sulcata is strong and aggressive and can easily move furniture and damage or destroy a typical house or apartment wall. When they start to dig up the property, it looks something like a mine field." She added that because sulcatas do not hibernate, they need expensive housing through the winter using commercial pig blankets (lights are not effective), and because their feces are so large similar to a German Sheppard’s, keeping them in the house is not an option for most people. Tellem, who founded the nonprofit ATR 20 years ago with her husband, Marshall Thompson, says, "Many owners assume that when the tortoise becomes a problem, zoos will take them. This is simply not true. Zoos are not interested in cast-off pets." Tellem says that the zoos, instead, refer people to her rescue, as well as others. She has placed hundreds into good homes but it is not the answer because it is not easy finding places with a half-acre or more, which is what a sulcata needs. Based on the record number of hatchlings and juveniles sold in pet stores as compared to hundreds in the 90s, this bred a catastrophe of unwanted pets. Tellem says that the option of placing the animal with a rescue organization or rehabber sounds good to most overwhelmed owners. Unfortunately, of those thousands of cute tortoises that are sold every year, rescue organizations can only take a few of them once they are huge. "Since the Sulcata can live 50 years or more, and because the males fight when placed together, overcrowded rescues run out of space. At that point, there is no solution," says Tellem. Tellem adds that some owners mistakenly think that they can sell the huge animal for a large profit. "There is no market for adult sulcatas," Tellem says. "The only options remaining are to dump the animal in the wild where they will definitely end up dead, or to give it up for adoption to a rescue group." She added that her rescue is full as are most others and so the only option is finding a compassionate adopter who is willing to put up with the destruction. Aside from the potential for a slow death by freezing or starving that “dumped” sulcatas face, there are other problems. These include infecting native wildlife with parasites and foreign diseases. This could result in the eradication of already threatened nativespecies. There is also the issue of introduction of yet another non-native species into a precariously balanced ecosystem. Tellem and Thompson say that breeders won't turn their backs on an obvious money making machine. "So what we request is simply market driven economics. People shouldn’t buy sulcatas. Pet stores should stop selling them. Reptile shows must have a 'no sulcata' policy. Only then will breeders have no choice but to stop breeding them," the pair agrees. There are many national rescue organizations listed on the ATR website www.tortoise.com all of which can facilitate sulcata adoptions if people are interested in getting one. American Tortoise Rescue, Malibu, Calif., is a nonprofit founded in 1990 to provide for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle. For more information, contact: American Tortoise Rescue at www.tortoise.com ; or email [email protected]. Follow us on Twitter @tortoiserescue and on Facebook. About Us American Tortoise Rescue is a nonprofit founded in 1990 for the protection of all species of turtles and tortoises. We have rescued more than 3,000 since our inception. Foundlings that cannot be adopted because of ill health remain in the care of ATR for the remainder of their lives. ATR acts as a clearinghouse for information about turtle care. We work to abolish “live market” slaughter of turtles in the US, the cruel importation and exploitation of a variety of species and protecting the desert tortoise. Quick facts

I have a pet Sulcate tortoise which I must find a good home for. My tortoise weighs about eighty pounds and is about nineteen years old. I love my tortoise but I am 86 years old and living alone with very little help. I lost my husband a year ago. I fell recently, sustaining severe injuries. Due to the injuries I can no longer care for my pet tortoise.

He probably has gopher tortoise. They are native to Florida and you often see several if there is suitable habitat available. They are also considered a protected species so it is illegal to relocate without expressed permitted authority of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. He can contact them for verification.

Hi, We need to find a home for Tomato - our daughter’s 4 yr old male Sulcata tortoise. He’s been raised indoors and he’s entirely too big to be comfortable living in her upstairs bedroom. He’s around 25 lbs now and very healthy and, we hope, happy - despite his lack of room to roam. We are in Prince Georges County, Maryland (close to Washington, DC and Virginia. Please text me at 301-509-2376 if you know of anyone who might want to provide him with a more suitable home. Thank you

I fell into the pet store tortoise trap. I bought this little adorable baby that could fit in my hand, he looked miserable in a little tank and kept ramming the side. I went home and couldn’t sleep for worrying about it. I went back the next day and brought him home with a big nice price tag attached and no idea how to take care of him correctly. It’s been a learning curve and a struggle but I’m literally taking it day by day. I came by this site because I’m frustrated and want to find him a new home with a more experienced owner who has more to offer my tortoise than I do. I hate to give him away and make him a burden on already overrun rescuers but I would rather ask and see than risk his life and health with me being inexperienced.

I recently received a two year old Sulcata that came from a family member- this tortoise is 3 1/2 inches front to back of his shell. I had gotten a Sulcata from this same breeder one month earlier both were the same size when purchased- my Sulcata is about 14 inches front to back and this little guy I just rescued never grew - I couldn’t hardly believe it was possible it was so little- could a Young sulcata really fail to thrive and stay so small? I feel so bad for him -

I have 2 sulcata's they are about 3-4 yrs old, my grand daughter got them and they were in a tank.. once they are about a year they need to be loose and free.. and that is how I got them..lol they are in the back yard now..one has a burrow he sleeps in the other comes in and get into a cat bed. they are a pain I wont' lie..they escape easy faster than you would think they can. you can pet them but for the most part they just eat all day poop a lot have a strick diet and will grow and out live me

I have a male sulcata that is about 9 years old. It was given to my daughter, a school teacher, as a "class pet". As he grew larger, she was unable to keep him in a tank,so I adopted him. He is a large, beautiful tortoise and now weighs about 50 lbs. or so. Although he is heavy to pick up, he can be lured easily with anything red in color! He roams our yard during the day and sleeps in a doghouse at night. He gets along well with my small breed dogs. Lately he can become aggressive, run at me and ram my ankle while I'm out doing yard work! Because I am afraid he may hurt my young grandchildren and also because of his extensive burrowing, I am sorry to say that I must find a new, loving home for him. If anyone can help, please let me know.

I was thinking of buying a sulcata tortoise. After reading the comments here, I am not so sure this is the tortoise for me. This has nothing to do with its size but rather that I was told they were not aggressive. According to one of the gentleman above, his is. I really love the idea of having a pet that my children's children will get to see and interact with. I would like to start with a hatchling as I do not have a big enough space at the moment for aalarger one but plan on moving within the next year

I have two and one is Sweet and the other is not safe around children or slow adults and they are very fast growers . Mine went from being inside to being outside in two years and they cost about extra hundred month to heat their house s in winter in our mild southern weather .

Hello! I'm having kind of a problem where I live...the Romaine lettuce that I feed my 9 year old sulcata tortoise is being removed from the grocery shelves because of the E coli out break and I'm trying to find other things to feed her but when I look up on the Internet I get different things...some tell one thing then another tells me something else....but if anyone else has had this problem please let me know what you did.

In the best interest of good health for Sulcata Tortoises, feed Minimal amount of collard greens. Good to limit greens that are high in oxalates.

I inherited a 30 lb Sulcata from my ex and have room for him. But does anyone know how much food they should have for a given body size? In the summer, he mows my back lawn, but in winter, I have an inside space for him with UV and basking heat lamp. I don't know what weight of greens would be typical, or whether it is humane and appropriate to limit his winter diet to slow his growth rate. I understand in the wild, they eat little between rainy seasons.

Hello I am looking to rehome a sulcata, any size is okay because I have an orchard and would love to have a tortoise to eat leftover veggies and fruits in mg yard. We used to have one but was stolen. I would buy but do not support breeding these animals. I would rather adopt. Would give her a great life and would never breed them. Feel free to email me if someone is looking to rehome, I live in Miami but willing to travel. Email me [email protected]

Hello, we have an 18 acre farm in north GA, in Talking Rock, approx 1hr from you. We have the means and knowledge to successfully care for one large sulcata, sex does not matter. We have fenced in area with heated housing for cooler months with direct indoor/outdoor space for the tortoise to access at his/her desire. It would be loved with lifetime homing and absolutely no breeding intentions. We own a multitude of other animals, some rescues, all well handled and people oriented and treated as pets. We farm mushrooms with plans of ag student teaching programs and student learning visits. We are a owner working based farm where an actual owner lives onsite at all times and resides just feet from where the tourtoise would be housed and fenced. The pet will be handled daily with optimal the care it deserves for longevity.

Hello, I just purchased a baby tortoise and was told they would make great pets and only reach a medium, indoor capable size. As I'm reading I realize this is not true. I will be moving in March to a new home with an HOA that I am sure would not be happy with a tortoise living outside nor do I know if our yard would even be suitable and where I would put them in winter. After reading I see this pet is more suitable for down south (I live in PA). If anyone would like to adopt this sweet baby please let me know. I want him/her to have a good home with proper space I was told I would be able to easily provide.

I have a 13 year old African Spurred Tortoise who weighs 55 lbs (best guess) that I need to rehome. We bought him as a baby when we lived in Jupiter, Florida. Now we live with him in Louisville, Kentucky and the climate is a challenge to continue. He’s the sweetest tortoise and has his own Facebook page called Peaches the Kentucky African Tortoise. I sincerely want a better life for him in the right climate with a loving home as difficult as it is to let him go. My email is [email protected] if you might be the next family for Peaches.

Hello, we have been researching this for some time and my family and I have decided we are ready and excited to adopt a Sulcata tortoise (hopefully a female 🐢 <3 we have 5 acres in Oregon and I under stand we will need to build her a very secured outdoor space with hidey space and Burrough proof parameters and and indoor space for when the temps drop or it’s wet and mucky out. If you live in Oregon, Washington or the northern half of California, I can come pick up a sweet tortoise in need of a new home - any age (I will do due diligence for all ranges) but prefer female if possible... please contact me if you know a tortoise who needs a new home in the country [email protected] THANK YOU 🐢

I'm looking to adopt a medium to large-size sulcata tortoise. I live in Glendale Arizona have a huge backyard l surrounded by a block fence with a secured gate I secured the ground around the fence and gate so it couldn't dig . Building a large heated structure it could go in on the desert nights it could go in when temperatures drops in winter nights . More then half of the large yard has grass graze in. I have a 19 yr. old male, he weighs about 90 lbs. He is very intelligent, recognizes faces and owners. He will react differently around different people depending on the role they play in his life. He is a typical male tortoise and can be aggressive. He likes to "play" with all items in the backyard. If anybody is interested in him, please let me know. i live near Annapolis, MD.

I have a Male salcata, not sure of the age, estimated around 30 when she got him so close to 40 now if that was correct. My ex-wife purchased him and left him when she moved. I would like to find a home for him. He's about 14 inches long and maybe 20 pounds. I am located in northern Ohio so it isn't an ideal climate for them to be outside but I try to get him out as often as possible in the summer. If you are interested 419-310-1227

I have a male tortoise but his shell has a hole in it. I rescued it from a drunk woman when I was helping a friend move and she obviously didn’t care about Theodore (his name that came with him) so I took him in. I don’t know how to care for him, and I want Theo to go to a very loving home where he can roam around, explore, climb on rocks, etc. His favorite thing to do is lay on our railroad tie. If you are interested in him please text me at 520-965-4738 thank you!

It is with a heavy heart that I have made the decision to try to find a new caring and loving home for my Sulcata Tortoise, Dozer. Like may others when I purchased Dozer at our local pet shop 20 years ago, I was uneducated about tortoises. I live in Western NY where we have cold winters so I cannot provide a suitable environment outside. He needs a nice, big place to roam and get plenty of sun and exercise. Something I just can't provide. I am not sure if Dozer is male or female. He weighs around 20lbs. I am looking for someone who wants to give Dozer a good home. I am willing to drive, within reason. You can contact me at [email protected].

hi Irene. Are you still looking to adopt a Sulcata? I'm trying to help my sister find options for the 60 to 80 pound tortoise her son left behind. Humphrey is sweet as far as tortoises go, but has definitely outgrown the yard. My sis also has some health issues that makes caring for him difficult. We're in Glendale AZ. My nephew thinks he will be able to care for his sometime in the future but frankly that's just not realistic. If you are interested and patient, this could work. My name is Rene , cell 503-593-1034,

Hi, My husband and I are living in Ventura, Ca and looking to rescue a salcata turtle. We have a very large, secure yard and no dogs. I had a salcata turtle as a child and the darn thing walked up the back steps and out the garage. We posted lost signs everywhere. A year later I found out the neighbor right across the street had him. She would not give him back! Can you believe it! Anyway I still miss Oscar to this day. I would be thrilled to have another turtle to love. 661-299-8771 3/4/2021 10:27:05 pm

Large male Sulcata, 7 years. Northern California(SF bay area). "Dartanian's" family i co-parent with (as we lost our house in the Santa Rosa fires) is moving to Europe. About 60-70+ pounds right now. I'm just temporarily in a small condo and he needs room. I'll deliver or meet depending on distance away to family with sunshine, room to grow even more, and lawn he can mow for you😆. Hey there anyone reading this. I am hoping to adopt a sulcata tortise. I live in the northern Virginia area. My previous job gave me the opportunity to engage with and take care of 3 sulcatas and I just fell in love with these beautiful animals. I have thought about it for a few years and I feel now is a good time to look into adopting one that is in need of a good home. I live in the county and have plenty of space both inside and outside.

My wife and I have a 4 year old 32lb male Sulcata we are considering putting up for adoption if we can find a better home for him. He is very well taken care of, but we are in Boise, Idaho and would like to find him a warmer climate. We would like to see him in a large outdoor in closure with plenty of grass to graze. He currently spends summer outside and winter inside due to the cold weather. We are willing to travel to get him to the perfect home. If you’re interested please email me with some information about his potential future home. [email protected]

Hi there - thanks for sharing your information with each other to safely rehome sulcatas. As the owner of this website, I wanted to make sure you all have the proper information for feeding and care as I see some bad ideas posted and I want all the tortoises to stay healthy. Please reread this as many tortoise end up with expensive surgery from poor diet. NO Collard greens please!

Hello I have a 5 year old Sulcata AKA Speedy, who Is lonely :( he has no turtle friends to talk to about his day, he sleeps next to large boulders because they resemble other tortoise I painted a face on them. I don’t want see my little speedy sad he needs a special tortoise who likes nice slow walks down my backyard where they can look into each others eyes as they eat all the organic kale, collard greens & lettuce in the world grown right in my yard, lots of South Florida sun and a good family to watch them. if you are this family who needs someone to take care of your tortoise I will drive to you thank you please email me at - Alex

You are aware, although maybe not by your comment, these tortoises are solitaire reptiles! They are very happy being alone. Just FYI. Lol

Hello, I'm looking to adopt a sulcata tortoise! I had two before and loved them dearly but when I moved I couldn't take them with me so my mother is taking care of them. I finally have my own place and big yard for one. My mother however has grown attached to my giants so I can't take them from her and break her heart. I would love to rescue one. I live in Rockingham, NC if anyone has one please contact me. My email is [email protected] thank you. :)

I am looking to adopt a sulcata or african tortoise that needs rehomed into a forever home. I have good stable fencing and can provide all necessary nutrients and shelter as well as afford good vet care. I do have experience with other breeds and even have 3 others in my yard. I am located in SE New Mexico and am willing to travel.

If interested, I have 2 sulcatas. About 3 years old. They both appear to be female, but I'm not 100% sure. I have a large terrarium, uv light and 2 heat lamps. I also have an outdoor box for the warm months. It might only fit them for maybe 2 more years. I live in northern Mississippi. I am moving soon to a colder climate, so if someone wants them they would probably be much happier somewhere warmer.

This article was very informative. I’m so sad to hear that people won’t stop breeding them. It really puts this species at risk. Please spread the word.

It's so disturbing to me how thoughtless our society is as a whole. Praise God for people like you that put awareness out there. It just sickens me when people purchase any sort of animal before doing their research. Case in point: the everglades now over run by pythons. Most Sulcatas will live well past the age of the owner and then what? Did the owner make any plans on what would happen to the tortoise after they pass on? And yes, many people do not even consider what it takes to feed and care for sulcatas. Just makes me sick. My husband and I adopted two sulcatas in which the owners had not thoughtfully planned things out. We will be sure to plan out who will take them should we die first. How do we get a law passed on this? If I had my way, all breeders would be put out of business, except a few that are necessary. There are many sulcatas for adoption because when they reach age 10 or so, they become desructive desroying everything in sight, trying to break through glass doors, eating huge amounts of expensive Mazuri and other tortoise food and becoming a hazard for small children. Blus dogs try to kill them. I have been doing this rescue for more than 30 years and it is horrible how many are dumped. Susan, American Tortoise Rescue and founder of this site.

Praise God for people like you that are out there rescuing them. Ya know that t-shirt that reads...."ewwww, people". LOL that's how I feel some days! But praise God for the people like you that make me feel good about some of our humanity!

The truly sad thing is we have this thing called The Internet where anyone can look up all these facts online now before they purchase a hatchling tortoise. They CAN be very destructive. We know this first hand having adopted two ourselves, but we did our research and prepared for them. But this still did not completely prepare us for everything, but it did not matter. We continue to adapt and do what we can to make everything OK for them and to keep them safe. We took on the responsibility to bring these living creatures into our lives, so they are now our responsibility. So many in our world are losing the capacity to accept responsibility, especially when it comes to animals. I am grateful to those people out there that at least are humble enough to find someone to adopt their tortoises instead of just throwing them out in the woods somewhere. Bless those owners that do have enough care and empathy in their hearts to do this. There is no shame in admitting when we are wrong. The shame is when we knowingly throw an animal out into the wild knowing they probably suffer.

Sorry, one last note. I do understand that sometimes life does throw us curve balls - ones we were not expecting, which is why we have to find people to adopt our pets. Again, praise God for the kind hearted, empathetic people of this world that go out of their way to find others to help them, instead of throwing those helpless creatures out with the trash.

I guess this is a day late, but the site seemed like it was down yesterday when I tried to log on. Anyway, I would check the local pet lost and found Facebook pages. That’s what my wife did when our sulcatta got out of our yard. She posted it on every fb page in the area. Unfortunately, ours was found by a neighbor who decided to relocate to their huge farm
