Hi, Jon. Those glasses frames are NOT made from tortoise shell. They are typical plastic, and the material is made to look like tortoise shell. The name of the glasses, “ Save the Tortoise” says it all: faux tortoise shell. The look of it without a tortoise having to die. Basically, a “knock off”. 🐢

Right up until the late 70s, real tortoise shell was used on frames. In 1973, the tortoise population could no longer take it. Thanks to an intervention from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, the use of tortoiseshell was outlawed worldwide.
