Rescue Stories
Meet
Scoop, a Chinese Box Turtle who spent eight miserable years cooped up in a tank
with nothing to eat but raw steak every other week. As you can see, his shell is
far too small for his body, and he has other developmental abnormalities.
There’s
Dr. Fong (right) a beautiful desert tortoise whose right leg and gular were
chewed off by a dog. He was left bleeding on the steps of a veterinarian. Dogs
and turtles do not mix.
Other Rescues
Mercury, a desert tortoise whose shell barely covered her pathetic
little body. She was so undernourished that while her body grew, her shell did
not.
Fluffy, the water cooter, was scooped out of the L.A. River and spent several
days being hauled around in a backpack until we took him in.
These are just a few of the hundreds of sad stories at American Tortoise Rescue.
We need your help and support to keep the
sanctuary open and saving injured and abandoned turtles and tortoises.
Our
heating, printing, 800 number, and veterinarian bills continue to skyrocket. We
put in many hours each day caring for our rescued reptiles, maintaining the
facilities, cleaning tanks, feeding, disinfecting, attending to paperwork,
answering calls from our members and the news media, writing articles, creating
video public service announcements, attending various turtle and tortoise
society functions, educating the public, screening applicants, and adopting
animals. All in addition to our full-time jobs. Whew!
It is tough, but rewarding work, and it is you who make it possible. We are
here permanently for the good of the turtles and tortoises. Your donations are
like the for the deep sea diver. The harder we work to save the animals we all
love, the more air we need, the more we need your financial contributions.
Please. Think about how much the turtles and tortoises need your support and
give as generously to the American Tortoise Rescue as you can. Thank you.
