Letters to Mayor James Hahn and the Los Angeles City Council
September 5, 2001
SUBJECT: Someone is looking the other way
Council Men and Women: I am extremely disturbed by the ongoing disregard for
animals, city sales tax, trash and other activities that are widely apparent in
the Santee Alley around Santee and Olympic. I visited this hellhole for about
four hours on Sunday because of numerous complaints from my members. Trash was
all over the street, illegal and other animals sat in their own excrement, no
police foot patrols were around, though there were thousands of people selling
and buying illegal animals and counterfeit goods. What also shocked me was that
no one was paying sales tax. Who has given the order to look the other way? Why
are animals being sold illegally? (I specifically refer to hatchling turtles
under four inches, which carry salmonella). I would like an answer from everyone
of you separately, but especially you Mr. Garcetti. Thank you.
