AUGUSTA (AP) -- A state panel has approved a complete ban on the
commercial harvest of snapping turtles in Maine. Animal rights
activists
declared victory after Thursday's unanimous vote by the Department
of Inland
Fisheries and Wildlife Advisory Commission.
Hundreds of people, and several organizations including Maine Audubon
Society, lobbied for the ban. Commission members were swamped with letters,
e-mails and telephone calls on the issue.
Commissioner Lee Perry supported the ban, but disagreed with the activists'
idea that Maine's snapping turtles are in trouble. The trappers themselves
didn't put up much of a fight. There are only about five of them left in
the entire state.
